The 2013–14 season is Tottenham Hotspur’s 22nd season in the Premier League and 36th successive season in the top division of the English football league system. The campaign will feature Tottenham’s 12th appearance in the UEFA Europa League (formerly the UEFA Cup), entering the Play-off round due to finishing fifth in the 2012–13 Premier League season.
The 2013-14 premier league season will become interesting as Tottenham Hotspurs have strengthened their side in looking forward to a top 4 finish which they barely missed out on last season. With the likes of Paulinho, Bale, Defoe, Dembele, Vertonghen on their side the team is strongly within a chance to finish in the top 4 in the upcoming season. Here we have a review on the manager, squad, first team, tactics, formation, starting 11 and the bench of the team.
Andre Villas had a comparatively good first season with spurs after being sacked by Chelsea the previous year. As a successor to Harry Redknapp he performed well as a manager despite losing some key matches.
He is an attacking minded coach. Although he lacks in experience, we can expect Spurs to perform well under him.
Now let’s take a look at the squad after the transfers so far this season:
Like their previous season the team is likely to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation which is very suitable for attacking through the flank. With Bale & Lennon operating in the wings, it is very easy to break the opponent’s defense. Also with a 4 man defense & 2 holding mid fielders, the full backs can generally push up providing extra support. And the holding midfielders can cover up for that.
There are 3 goal keepers in the 2013-14 Spurs squad. French international Hugo Lloris is the first choice keeper while veteran Brad Friedel is usually used in cup ties. The third keeper Heurelho Gomez makes occasional appearances.
The 4 man Tottenham defense is moderate considering other teams but on their day, they are capable of stopping some of the finest forwards. With Kyle Walker & Assue-Koto being the 1st choice full backs, opponent’s wing play might get limited. The sheer speed can provide with stopping some of the fastest players. The first choice center backs also provide tackling & aerial abilities. With Michael Dawson & Belgian International Jan Vertonghen the first choice centre backs, the squad also has depth considering Younes Kaboul.
Defensive & Holding Midfield:
The spurs midfield is a good one. Newly bought Brazilian Paulinho, Huddlestone, Sandro, Scott Parker, Musa Dembele, Jake Livermore can play as the central mid-fielders being rotated for the best performance. Due to the premier league schedule being highly tight, team needs to have good depth for the best result. 2 at most 3 players will play regularly depending on the coach. New Signing Paulinho is a Box-to-Box player providing attack as well as defensive duties on the field.
The Attacking Midfield:
The 3 people operating here are very crucial. They provide the main Attack for the team. The players available for these part are Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon, Gylfi Sigguardson, Lewis Hotlby, and Nacer Chadli. Gareth Bale is considered the heart of Tottenham attack after his amazing performance in the second part of the season last time around. He solely carried Spurs on his shoulders. He is likely to be seen operating down the left flank while Lennon will play in the right. Sigguardson & Holtby will be playing the center attacking role alternatively on Andre Villas choice.
In the striking position we will be seeing either Jermain Defoe or Emmanuel Adebayor. Defoe is a first choice for striking due to his amazing performances in his Tottenham career while Adebayor will make a good Substitute for him in when he’s away.
Transfers & Rumours:
The spurs have bought 2 players till now in this transfer window. Brazilian sensation Paulinho has been bought for £17m & Nacer Chadli whose market value is round about £7.9m. Tottenham are likely to bring Spanish striker Soldado from Valencia. If the moves goes through, it’ll be a major boost for the Tottenham attack.
Their star player Gareth Bale is targeted by Real Madrid C.F. for whom Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levi wants £100m+. Gareth Bale performed so well last season that he won the PFA Player of the Year award.
The spurs squad for the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League looks a promising one. If the players can perform up to their full potential, and the team remains as it is now they are well in for a top 4 finish.
